How have we almost wrapped 2020? We are a short two weeks away from having 2020 in the books. It’s easy to wish 2020 away. There has been heartache in the form of losing loved ones, losing jobs. It’s been a tough year in so many ways. While I am keenly aware of those things, I also think it’s important not to wish away our lives and to find the good where we can.

2020 was a transformative year for me. Our second daughter came into the world just after the new year. I then left the corporate world to become my own boss. I founded MPower Co, worked with my mom Dr. Thia, and focused on providing financial education. Launching the business coincided with the first round of stay-at-home orders across the country.

While it would seem like the opposite of the perfect time to make a huge life change, it couldn’t have worked out any better. Yes, it was a little scary, and perhaps things started a little slower than maybe they would have otherwise (maybe not!), but I’m so thankful. I love the time that I get to work on MPower, and I have loved getting to spend more time with our children. I’m confident that I saw our daughter’s first steps this past weekend, as I’m with her almost 24/7.

While 2020 has been anything from perfect (I’ve learned lessons, sometimes multiple times, and I’ve struggled at times missing people or places), I’ve had the opportunity to slow down and be with those I love most. I’ve had the chance to really think about what matters to me most.

So, since we’ve almost wrapped 2020, I want to take just a few minutes to reflect on the gifts MPower and I have enjoyed this past year.

6 Gifts MPower Has Given Me As We’ve Wrapped 2020

Working with My Mom

First of all, I have to be thankful for my Mom working on this business with me. Some of you may not realize that Dr. Thia, Director of Education at MPower, is also my mother. Yes, you read that right. Every time my mom and I sit down to work, I’m always learning from her. She is a pioneer, and I’m so thankful that she has given me the opportunity to work with her and for how we work together.

For some working together would not be possible; however, it’s clear to me that this entire business wouldn’t work as well without her and the immense knowledge she brings.

Working with Colleagues

I’m thankful for you. If you are reading this, I consider you my colleague. We are all working together to help you reach your goals, and I couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunity to provide help and guidance where I or Dr. Thia can.

If you have taken our courses, thank you.

If you follow us on social media, thank you.

This business is what it is because of our opportunity to serve you.

This past year my personal life was turned upside down when I suddenly had a husband working at home in a more than a full-time position. I had both girls home with me. I felt at times like I needed to not only be a business owner but also a parent, teacher, spouse, all at once.

There are many of us that have learned how to transition from one of these hats to the other very quickly without having a commute in between. I’m thankful that starting MPower this year gave me some needed flexibility that my life before MPower would not have provided.

Creative Outlet

I honestly love being creative. Writing for these blog posts and for our social media sites has been fun and challenging, and certainly has brought out my creative side on more than one occasion. It not only makes me test my mental thought processes but gives me an outlet to be creative in making sure to give relevant information. If the information isn’t timely, then it’s not beneficial.

In 2020, we accomplished a lot in short amounts of time. I’d be remiss to say 2020 was a transformative year for each of us and for MPower.  I think during the year we were able to be nimble to provide support as the tides in the world were changing.

For example, Dr. Thia wrote an entire course Tenacity for Tough Times on the powerful lessons of positive psychology that we all can benefit from. I’m so proud of the course. Dr. Thia’s ability to write it quickly, and us to update and launch it in such a short period of time.

MPC Book Club

One thing I started quickly in 2020 was the #MPCBookClub. It may seem silly but I’ve really enjoyed reading one book a month focused on either a financial or positive psychology topic. In my past work, I was reading books about money laundering and cartels, etc. So, I’ve really enjoyed getting back to the fundamentals of finance and well-being. It’s a bit lighter!

As We Have Wrapped 2020, It’s Time to Think About 2021

As we are getting close to having 2020 in the books, I can’t help but transition to thinking about 2021. I’m so thankful for how MPower has grown this past year, and I’m excited about our plans to grow in 2021. Here are two, of many, things that I’m looking forward to for 2021:

Our Courses

In 2021, we will be offering each of our courses to the public once throughout the year. The material in Richer Retirement and MPowered Couple will be updated to make sure it is current.

The biggest change will come with respect to our positive psychology course. I’m so excited to announce that we are changing Tenacity for Tough Times to Happiness Habitudes. Positive Psychology is all about being proactive and progressive, and we think Happiness Habitudes will truly encompass that.

Make sure to follow us on social media (Facebook and Instagram) or join our email list to be updated when registration is open!

Quarterly Free Printables or Downloads

In 2021 we are going to have one free printable or download a quarter that will provide more in-depth information on a financial topic. Each quarter will have a very different topic and will be focused on subjects from personal finance and positive psychology.

We hope that these free guides will further empower you to realize your financial and well-being goals. Our first one will be on our website before the end of this year!

Now that We’ve Wrapped 2020

In closing for 2020, thank you for being here. Thank you for showing up and being a part of this business! It means so much to me personally and to my family. I hope that in some way, large or small, we have helped you to weather 2020 a little more successfully and can be part of your support system in 2021!
